How to rank in Google AI Mode
The same way as in AI Overviews, by Google's account: a page that is indexed and can show a snippet is eligible, with nothing extra to add. What differs is the answer. AI Mode runs its own Gemini model, splits a question into many searches, takes follow-ups and can draw on your past searches, and in our runs it cited none of the AI Overview's pages for most questions.
Checked against the studies and help pages it cites on October 20, 2026.
What Google says sets AI Mode apart.
For what a page needs, Google gives AI Mode and AI Overviews one set of rules, and the AI Overviews guide has them. What Google describes differently is how AI Mode writes its answer.
No extra requirements
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that both may issue several related searches, its query fan-out. It adds that the two may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary.[1]
A custom Gemini model
Google introduced AI Mode in March 2025 on a custom version of Gemini 2.0. In May 2025 Google said it was bringing a custom version of Gemini 2.5 to AI Mode and AI Overviews in the US.[2, 3]
A question split into many searches
Google describes AI Mode as breaking a question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries at once on the searcher's behalf. Deep Search, inside AI Mode, takes the same technique further and can issue hundreds of searches.[3, 4]
Made for harder questions
Google calls AI Mode particularly helpful where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed: questions that might have taken several searches before.[1]
Follow-up questions
A searcher can keep asking in the same thread. Search Console counts each follow-up as a new query, with its own impressions, positions and clicks.[4, 5]
Past searches
Personal Intelligence in AI Mode references previous searches and activity saved in a person's Search Services History, for people 18 or older with history and personalized recommendations switched on.[4]
Sometimes only links
When Google isn't confident enough in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response, AI Mode shows a set of web links instead.[2, 4]
AI Mode and AI Overviews, asked the same question.
We put the AI Overview and AI Mode answers to the same question, asked in the same run, side by side, and compared the pages each cited and the product each named first.
questions where AI Mode and the AI Overview cited at least one page in common. On the rest, no page was cited by both.
of the pages either one cited for a question were cited by both: 111 of 1,692, counted question by question.
pages cited per answer on average, by AI Overviews and by AI Mode. In our runs the overview listed more sources.
questions where both named a product first and it was the same product.
The answers are from GEOFast's two demo projects (4 runs for trygeo.fast and 3 for plausible.io on October 6 and 7, 2026): questions about AI visibility tools and about web analytics, read from Google's results pages through our data provider as a desktop searcher in the US would see them. 44 of 191 AI Overviews calls and 2 of 191 AI Mode calls failed at the provider and are left out, leaving 146 questions both answered in the same run. A page counts as shared when both cited the same URL. The first-named comparison leaves out questions about the brand itself.
Limits: two fields, one country and two days; GEOFast's onboarding drafted the questions. Each answer is one generation, and the same surface asked again can cite other pages, so the overlap between what the two could cite is likely higher than what they did cite.
Same conclusions, different sources.
Ahrefs compared the two at a far larger scale. Its numbers and ours measure overlap in different ways and agree on the point: the two cite different pages.
13.7% of cited URLs in common
Across 540,000 pairs of US queries from September 2025, AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs 13.7% of the time, and 16.3% for the top three citations. Their answers still meant much the same: an average semantic similarity of 86%.[6]
AI Mode names more brands
Ahrefs counted 3.3 people or brands per AI Mode answer against 1.3 per AI Overview, and found AI Mode answers about four times longer.[6] In our runs, answers to plausible.io's questions that don't name it named Plausible in 38 of 46 AI Mode answers and 32 of the same 46 AI Overviews.
Different favorite sources
Wikipedia made up 28.9% of AI Mode's citations against 18.1% of AI Overviews', YouTube was AI Overviews' top source, and Reddit was cited at a similar rate by both.[6]
How far to trust it
Ahrefs compared one generation of each answer, and notes that its earlier research found 45% of AI Overview citations changing between generations. Its data comes from Brand Radar, which it sells.[6]
AI Mode in Search Console.
Search Console counts AI Mode, with rules of its own, and holds the one switch that takes a site out.
Counted under Web
AI Mode's clicks and impressions are in the Performance report under the Web search type. A click counts when it goes to an external page. Position follows the method of an ordinary results page, where an AI Overview takes one position for every link in it.[1, 5]
The generative AI report
Since August 31, 2026, every site has a Generative AI performance report: impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device. It lists no dimension that separates AI Mode from AI Overviews, and shows impressions, not clicks.[7]
One switch for both
The Search generative AI control in Search Console takes a site out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative features together, generally within a few days. It doesn't stop training: Google points to Google-Extended for that.[8]
Count the answers too
Impressions say your link was shown, not whether the answer named you or put you first. Ask your buyers' questions in AI Mode several times and count, as the guide to checking by hand sets out.
Working for AI Mode.
The page work is the same as for AI Overviews. What AI Mode changes is which questions a page should answer, and how you keep count.
The basics first
Crawlable by Googlebot, indexed, eligible for a snippet, with the content in text: the AI Overviews guide covers each. The free GEO audit checks your pages for them.
Answer the parts of a question
AI Mode searches the subtopics of a question, not only the question. Our reading, not a rule Google states: a page that answers one part plainly, such as a price, a limit or a comparison, can be found by one of those searches even when it doesn't rank for the whole question.
Comparisons people would ask about
Google names complex comparisons among the questions AI Mode is most helpful for.[1] A page that compares your product with the alternatives fairly, with the facts in text, gives those questions something to find.
Track it apart from AI Overviews
With 56 of 146 questions sharing a cited page in our runs, how you fare in one says little about the other. Count each on its own.
Counted for you
AI visibility tracking reads AI Overviews and AI Mode for your questions as two engines, on a schedule, each rate with its 90% range.
Questions about Google's AI Mode.
Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. Both run on Google Search's index and need nothing extra from your site, but Google says they may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links differ. AI Mode is a separate place to ask, with follow-up questions, and Google says it expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning.
Can I opt out of AI Mode but stay in AI Overviews?
Not with Search Console's switch. Its Search generative AI control covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover together, and its help page describes no way to keep one and leave another. The snippet controls, such as nosnippet, apply to both as well.
Does AI Mode show up in Search Console?
Yes. Clicks and impressions from AI Mode count in the Performance report under the Web search type, and a follow-up question counts as a new query. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no dimension listed that separates the two.
Does AI Mode personalize its answers?
It can. Google's help page says Personal Intelligence in AI Mode references previous searches and activity saved in your Search Services History, for people 18 or older with history and personalized recommendations on. Someone else asking the same question may see a different answer.
Why does AI Mode sometimes show only links?
Google says that when it doesn't have high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response, AI Mode shows a set of web links instead.
