How to rank in Google's AI Overviews
Google says there is nothing extra to do: a page that is indexed and can be shown with a snippet is eligible to be a supporting link in an AI Overview, with no special files or markup. It doesn't have to rank for the search itself: in Ahrefs' 2026 study, 38% of the URLs AI Overviews cited ranked in the top 10 for the same search.
Checked against the studies and help pages it cites on October 13, 2026.
What Google says is and isn't needed.
Google's documentation on AI features in Search has no list of tricks. The features run on Search itself, so its requirements are Search's.
No extra requirements
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations. You don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or special schema.org structured data.[1]
Eligible: indexed, with a snippet
To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google adds that meeting every requirement doesn't guarantee that a page is crawled, indexed or served.[1]
Query fan-out
AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and find more supporting pages while the response is written. Google says this lets them show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic search.[1]
An overview isn't always shown
AI Overviews appear only when Google's systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often don't trigger. AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so its links differ.[1]
What Google does advise
The SEO fundamentals: crawling allowed in robots.txt and by your CDN or host, internal links, important content in text, and structured data that matches the visible page. A May 2025 post by Google's John Mueller adds unique, non-commodity content.[1, 2] The GEO audit and the AI crawler checker test the access part.
Googlebot, nosnippet and Google-Extended.
You can limit what AI Overviews take from a page. The switch many people reach for first, Google-Extended, isn't the one.
Googlebot is the crawler
Google says AI is built into Search, so robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control over crawling for its AI features too.[1]
nosnippet and max-snippet
nosnippet stops a page's content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much may be used.[3] Google lists data-nosnippet and noindex with them, and says more restrictive settings limit how your content is featured.[1, 2]
Google-Extended is not the switch
Google-Extended decides whether your content trains Gemini models and grounds answers in the Gemini apps and Vertex AI. Google says it doesn't affect a site's inclusion in Search and isn't a ranking signal.[4] The crawler guide explains each token.
Changes wait for a recrawl
Google says recrawling can take from several days to several months. The URL Inspection tool shows what Googlebot received, and you can request a recrawl.[1]
What independent studies and our data show.
Ahrefs has measured twice how far AI Overviews' links match the ordinary results. We read what the sites AI answers cite tell Google's crawlers.
of the URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the same search, in Ahrefs' March 2026 study. 31% ranked outside the top 100.[5]
was Ahrefs' figure in July 2025, counted on the three most visible citations of 1 million overviews.[6]
correlation between mentions of a brand on other sites and mentions of it in AI Overviews, in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands. For backlinks: 0.22.[7]
of the cited sites we read block Google-Extended. 1 of 1,529 blocks Googlebot.
Ahrefs' 2026 study covers 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs from its own Brand Radar, and counts a match when the same URL is in the overview and in the results for the same search.[5] Its 2025 study counted only the three most visible citations of each overview, and Ahrefs says its parsing has since improved to see more citations, so the two figures don't measure the same thing.[6] The brand study (May 2025) used Spearman correlations over domains with a Domain Rating above 40. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar.[7]
We took the 1,605 sites cited in 1,033 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, recorded on October 6 and 7, 2026 for 54 questions about AI visibility tools and web analytics, and read each site's robots.txt as GEOFastBot with the X-ray's own rules on October 8, 2026. These are sites AI answers already cite, so sites that shut AI search crawlers out may be rarer here than on the web at large, and a site can serve other crawlers other rules than it served us. Shares are of the 1,529 of 1,605 sites whose robots.txt we could read, or that have none; 62 refused our request. The sites were cited by any of the six engines, not only by Google's.
Do AI Overviews use your Google ranking?
Partly. A page has to be in Google's index, but it doesn't have to rank for the search the person typed.
Top 10 for the same search: a minority
In Ahrefs' 2026 data, 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 for the same search, 31.2% in positions 11 to 100, and 31.0% beyond 100.[5]
Fan-out is the likely reason
Ahrefs suggests overviews now draw more on the results of fan-out searches than on the original one, which fits Google's description of the technique. Of the cited URLs that ranked outside the top 100, 18.2% were YouTube videos.[1, 5]
Brand mentions track with being named
Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found that mentions of the brand on other sites correlated most with mentions in AI Overviews (0.664), ahead of Domain Rating (0.326) and backlinks (0.218). It stresses that correlation isn't causation.[7]
The same search, different answers
In SparkToro's study, the chance that Google's AI gave the same list of brands twice was under 1 in 100.[8] In a 2026 audit of product advice, the products AI Overviews recommended overlapped 0.421 across repeats of one request, where 1 means the same products every time.[9]
How to see whether you show up.
Search Console counts the traffic. Whether an overview names or links you is a separate count.
Search Console, under Web
Sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's overall search traffic, in the Performance report under the Web search type.[1]
Google's claim about clicks
Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning visitors are more likely to spend more time on the site. Its page gives no figures.[1]
Count the answers
Run your buyers' searches several times and count how often the overview names you and links you. The method in the guide to checking ChatGPT by hand applies here too.
ChatGPT is a separate job
ChatGPT has its own crawler and its own rules. See getting recommended by ChatGPT and getting cited by ChatGPT.
Counted for you
AI visibility tracking asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI your questions on a schedule, the same way each time, and shows each rate with its 90% range.
Questions about ranking in AI Overviews.
Do AI Overviews use my Google ranking?
They use Google's index: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be linked. It doesn't have to rank for the search itself. In Ahrefs' 2026 study, 38% of the URLs AI Overviews cited ranked in the top 10 for the same search, and 31% ranked outside the top 100.
How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?
Google says there is nothing extra to do beyond the SEO fundamentals: let Googlebot crawl the page, get it indexed, keep it eligible for a snippet and put the important content in text. Google also says indexing and serving are never guaranteed.
Do I need schema markup or llms.txt for AI Overviews?
No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If you do use structured data, it should match the text visible on the page.
Does blocking Google-Extended take me out of AI Overviews?
Not by Google's account. Google-Extended covers training of Gemini models and grounding in the Gemini apps and Vertex AI, and Google says it doesn't affect a site's inclusion in Search. To limit what AI Overviews use, Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
How long until a change shows in AI Overviews?
It waits on Google recrawling the page, which Google says can take from several days to several months. You can check what Googlebot received with the URL Inspection tool and request a recrawl.
