How to get cited by ChatGPT
ChatGPT cites a page when it searches the web and links that page as a source. To be eligible, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site and check that your host or CDN doesn't turn it away. OpenAI says it ranks results on several factors and guarantees no placement. Being cited isn't being recommended: an answer can link your page without naming you as an option.
Checked against the studies and help pages it cites on October 13, 2026.
How ChatGPT search finds and picks pages.
A citation is a link ChatGPT attaches to an answer it wrote from a web search. OpenAI's own pages describe the path a page takes to get there.
It starts with a search
ChatGPT searches when a question would benefit from current information, or when the person picks Search. Answers that use search may carry citations, and a Sources button lists the cited pages and other relevant links.[1]
It rewrites the question
ChatGPT typically turns the question into one or more targeted queries for its partner search providers, and may send narrower ones after reading the first results. The help page links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for those providers.[1]
OAI-SearchBot decides who is eligible
Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot aren't shown in ChatGPT's search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate setting, and ChatGPT-User isn't used to decide what appears in search.[2] The crawler guide covers each one.
Ranked for relevance and reliability
OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results on multiple factors meant to help people find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. Its page lists no factors.[1]
Cited is not recommended
A citation links your page as a source. A recommendation names your business in the answer's text, and an answer can do either without the other. Getting recommended has its own guide.
What makes a page usable as a source.
The first requirement comes from OpenAI. The rest is evidence from studies, each with its limits.
The crawler can reach it
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and confirm that your host or CDN lets traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses through.[1] A robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register; OpenAI's pages give no time for a new or edited page.[2] The AI crawler checker fetches your homepage as the crawler, which catches a firewall that robots.txt can't show.
The text is in the HTML
Vercel's 2024 study found none of the major AI crawlers, OAI-SearchBot among them, running JavaScript.[3] The free GEO audit shows what a crawler gets from each of your pages.
It holds facts a reply can quote
In the GEO paper's tests, adding quotations, statistics or cited sources to a page raised its visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40% on the paper's main measure. Keyword stuffing did little, and on Perplexity it did 10% worse than leaving the page alone. The tests ran on the authors' own engine built on GPT-3.5 and on Perplexity, not on ChatGPT search.[4]
Recent updates correlate with more citations
SE Ranking modeled ChatGPT citations for 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages. Pages updated in the past three months averaged 6.0 citations, against 3.6 for older ones. That is a correlation, from a company that sells SEO software, and the study doesn't say how its prompts were chosen.[5]
What AI answers cite, in our own runs.
We sorted the pages cited in one project's recorded answers by kind, and rendered cited pages to see how much of their text needs JavaScript.
of 5,261 citations went to guides and how-tos, the largest kind across the six engines.
of ChatGPT's own citations went to documentation and help centers, against 7% across all six engines. Vendors' product pages took 18% of its citations, against 5.5%.
of the cited pages we rendered show at least 99.5% of their main text in the HTML, where crawlers that skip JavaScript can read it.
Smaller kinds, each 2 to 3% (single-tool reviews, pricing pages, YouTube and studies), are left out, so the bars don't add up to 100%.
The kinds come from the answers GEOFast recorded for its own demo project: 29 questions about AI visibility tools, asked of 6 engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode) in US English, in 4 runs between 23:19 and 00:38 UTC on October 6 and 7, 2026. 24 AI Overviews calls failed, leaving 672 answers. In them we counted 5,261 citations of 2,321 URLs on 1,048 domains.
Limits: this is one field, and others will differ. GEOFast's onboarding drafted the questions, so they aren't measured demand, and six of them name a rival. Four runs that close together show how answers vary, not a trend.
The HTML figure is from our study of the 1,605 sites cited in 1,033 answers from the same six engines, recorded on October 6 and 7, 2026 for 54 questions about AI visibility tools and web analytics. We rendered up to 3 cited pages from 1,505 of the sites in Chrome, and 2,022 rendered cleanly. These pages were already cited, so pages a crawler can't read may be rarer here than on the web at large.
Backlinks, rankings and files: what the evidence says.
Where studies exist they are correlations, and they don't agree with each other.
Backlinks: two studies, two answers
The number of referring domains was the top factor in SE Ranking's model: sites with up to 2,500 averaged 1.6 to 1.8 citations, and sites with over 350,000 averaged 8.4.[5] Ahrefs, counting how often AI names a brand, not citations, found only very weak correlations with link metrics, and says such factors may simply mark a brand that is already strong.[6] Neither shows that building links earns citations.
Google rankings
In SE Ranking's data, pages in Google positions 1 to 45 averaged 5 citations, against 3.1 for positions 64 to 75. Its authors say that doesn't prove ChatGPT relies on Google's index.[5]
llms.txt and FAQ schema
Pages with FAQ schema averaged 3.6 citations, against 4.2 without. Taking llms.txt out of the model improved its predictions, which SE Ranking reads as ChatGPT not relying on the file.[5]
Whose pages get the link
In our runs, 62% of the citations that went to lists, alternatives pages, comparisons and reviews went to pages a rival or adjacent vendor had published. Vendors write most of the lists AI reads in that field.
Check your own citations
Open Sources under an answer to see what it cited. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.[1] One answer is a sample of one: the guide to checking ChatGPT by hand shows how to ask again and count.
Questions about ChatGPT citations.
Do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT?
Sites with more referring domains were cited more in SE Ranking's study of 129,000 domains, but that is a correlation, and Ahrefs found link metrics only very weakly tied to how often AI names a brand. Neither study shows that building links earns citations.
Where does ChatGPT search find the pages it cites?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, and its help page links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for them. OpenAI also runs its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
How do I get my content cited by AI?
Let the AI search crawlers reach your pages and keep the text in the HTML your server sends. In the GEO paper's tests, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page's visibility in generated answers by 30 to 40%, on a test engine and not on ChatGPT search.
Does llms.txt or FAQ schema get you cited by ChatGPT?
Not in the evidence so far. In SE Ranking's study, pages with FAQ schema averaged 3.6 citations against 4.2 without, and taking llms.txt out of its model improved the model's predictions.
How long until ChatGPT search notices a change?
About 24 hours for a robots.txt change, by OpenAI's own account. Its pages give no time for a new or edited page to be picked up.
Is being cited by ChatGPT the same as being recommended?
No. A citation links one of your pages as a source. A recommendation names your business in the answer's text. An answer can do either without the other. How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business
